Thermostat

As winter brings in dropping temperatures and cloudy skies to the Sacramento Valley, people are turning up their thermostats to take the “chill” off in their offices and households. As an HVAC contractor, we are always asked what is the optimal temperature to keep me comfortable without hurting my wallet?

California residents should expect to pay 31.8 cents per kilowatt-hour on average, which is the second most expensive rate in the nation. However, there are ways to combat these high rates when using your thermostat in your home or office.

PG&E, SMUD and HVAC industry officials all agree that setting your thermostat at 68 degrees will help maintain your comfort level and save you money at the same time. According to PG&E, for every degree you lower your thermostat during the winter you can save 1% annually on your energy bill. In addition to lowering the temperature on your thermostat you can install a programmable thermostat to set the schedules when you are in the home or office. We also encourage people to keep your HVAC in proper working order, and simple adjustments around the house such as:

Clean/replace your HVAC filters monthly

Keep air vents clear from obstructions

Make sure ductwork is insulated and connected

Check weatherstripping around doors & windows

Have the furnace tuned up before heating season
